For decades mainstream cardiologists have recognized the beneficial role played by the HDL cholesterol fraction. Every ratio indicating risk of heart disease uses it as the divisor. Be it the total cholesterol, the LDL, the LDL  plus  VLDL, or the dramatically important triglycerides, all are divided by the HDL and all these numbers, when they rise, will cause your doctor great concern.

HDL is one number you want to be as high as possible .How can you get it high and keep it there? Not with a low fat diet quite the contrary. HDL is lowered by a low fat diet, not so much by the absence of fat but by the increased consumption of carbohydrates that accompanies fat restriction.
