Your metabolic rate is one of several  important factors that determine your weight. It refers to the rate at which your body burns calories or utilizes energy.

Technically speaking, your basal metabolic rate is defined as the amount of oxygen your body uses when your system is totally at rest – twelve hours after eating, in a comfortable temperature, and not engaged in exercise, physical activity, or emotional excitement of any kind. If you have a fast metabolic rate, you’ll tend to be thin because you’ll need to take in lots of calories just to keep up with the rate at which your  body churns out energy.

If you have a slow metabolic rate, your calorie demand for energy is not very high. So, if you’re overweight, it’s essential for you to speed up your metabolic rate. How do you do that? It’s simple, really. All you need to do is to build up your lean body mass. There are two ways to do this: By cutting carbohydrates in your diet and doing same exercise.

Your basal metabolic rate is directly proportional to your lean body mass. In other words, the more muscles  you  have, the higher your metabolic rate, and the greater your body’s need for energy. As we grow older , it’s particularly important to maintain lean muscle mass. After age forty, muscles tend to diminish at the rate of one third of a pound a year. Generally speaking, men naturally maintain more muscle than woman, although it’s important for everyone to make an effort to develop muscle tissue.
