The metabolic syndrome is a group of five garden-variety risk factors that, when combined, indicate you are likely to develop diabetes, hypertension, (high blood pressure) and coronary artery (heart) disease. You officially have the metabolic syndrome if you have three or more of these signs:

  1. BELLY FAT: a waist circumference greater than (102cm) in men and (88cm) in women
  2. HIGH TRIGLYCERIDES: 150mg/dL (1.7mmol.l) or more
  3. LOW HDL (GOOD) CHOLESTEROL: under 40mg/dL (mmol/l) for men and under 50mg/dL (1.3mml) for women
  4. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: 135/85mmHg or greater
  5. HIGH BLOOD SUGAR: 110mg/dL (6.1mmol/l) or greater

You might call it love handles, a spare tire, a potbelly, or even a beer gut. Whatever the name, your protruding abdominal outline is caused by fat stored around your intestines and abdominal organs as well as right under your skin. Fat stored in this way is much more dangerous to your health than fat stored under the skin of your buttocks and thighs. Doctors use the waist to hip ratio (WHR) or waist circumference to define the point at which your belly fat stores are posing a health risk. This is because excessive belly fat makes the circumference of the waist bigger than that of the hips. To find your WHR, measure your waist at the navel and measure your hips, then divide the waist number by the hip number. For example, if your waist is 90cm and your hips are 100cm, your WHR is 0.9. The higher your WHR, the more ‘apple-shaped’ you are.
